10 Reasons I Love Driving Through (Rural) Central Florida {Day 12}

1. Because the speed limit changes every 30 seconds: 65mph to 60 to 55 to 45 to 35 to 30 to 35 to 45 to 55 to 65. And then one minute later we get to start all over again. So fun.

2. Random oddities on the side of the road. Such as a tee-pee. And a Taxidermy Museum. With free parking.

3. Because 2/3rds of all signs are spray painted on plywood

4. Businesses with names like the "salon" I saw today: Hairy Business, Etc.

5. Billboards announcing that the town 3.4 miles ahead (Lawtey, Starke, etc) is a SPEED TRAP!!!!!!!!!!

6. Quaint roadside gift shops from the 1950's that are still stuck in 1950. But hey, where else can you buy a seashell chandelier, the South's finest pecan pralines, and a neon green shirt with a dancing orange on it? Oh, and have an hour long conversation with an old lady who strangely feels like she could be your Grandma.

7. Memorial Highways named after people with nicknames like "Skeet" and "Butch"

8. The way the sun shines through the Spanish moss covered trees and casts a golden light on all the farmland

9. Restaurants that have food "like your Granny cooked it"

10. Because you're never more than 5 minutes away from hot boiled peanuts, real (dead) stuffed gator heads, and freshly squeezed orange juice

**And because my friend Virginia pointed out that I only gave 9 Pride & Prejudice vocab words:

10. Fulsome

Thanks Virginia! PS...Everyone needs to go check out her comment on that post. Nothing short of pure awesomeness!

And I think I've been had... I don't think I could work fulsome into that comment. :)

  2. Rachel,

You were definitely in my "neck of the woods." I went to visit a child that attended our church at that taxidermy shop. I was quite surprised when Googlemaps had me turn in there, but yep, he lives there! And Hairy Business- a friend keeps telling me I should go there. I still prefer to drive the other way out of town and go to a place I'm more familiar with...Hair Cuttery.

Next time, you'll have to call me. Glad you passed through the country. Should I laugh or cry that I live in (Rural) Central Florida? You better believe I was crying the day I pulled in from North Carolina :)

  3. If anyone could add fulsome, it would be you Virginia!

Leslie--I had no idea we were so close to you! We will definitely stop to see you next time :) Oh, and I think you should laugh...I love those small towns! SO much crazy, cute, weird, random stuff!

Oh, and can you even imagine living in that taxidermy museum??? Yikes!
