Christmas in Ethiopia!!

Ok...so anyone that doubts that God is intimately concerned with the small details of our lives has to listen to this! We have been so sad that we missed Jane's first Christmas--only by a week too. We had been hoping so much that she would be home before Christmas. God heard this desire & has answered in the most amazing & creative way! Since Ethiopia is not on a traditional Gregorian calendar (they are in the year 2002), the celebrate Christmas, called Ganna, on January 7. So after all that, we do get to spend Christmas with her in the place of her birth!! I am so super excited! We will get to participate in a church service on Christmas night and will get to take part in a gift-giving ceremony at the Transition Home. How cool is that?? I am super pumped...God heard the deepest desire of my heart & blessed my socks off!! If you're interested in more about Ganna, here's an article about traditions in Ethiopia:

Christmas Traditions in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in Africa. It still follows the ancient Julian calendar, so Ethiopians celebrate Christmas on January 7. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church's celebration of Christ's birth is called Ganna. It is a day when families attend church.
©2006 Publications International, Ltd.On January 19, Ethiopians begin the three-day celebration called Timkat. The day before Ganna, people fast all day. The next morning at dawn, everyone dresses in white. Most Ethiopians don a traditional shamma, a thin, white cotton wrap with brightly colored stripes across the ends. The shamma is worn somewhat like a toga. Urban Ethiopians might put on white Western garb. Then everyone goes to the early mass at four o'clock in the morning. In a celebration that takes place several days later, the priests will dress in turbans and red and white robes as they carry beautifully embroidered fringed umbrellas. Most Ethiopians who live outside the modern capital city, Addis Ababa, live in round mud-plastered houses with cone-shaped roofs of thatched straw. In areas where stone is plentiful, the houses may be rectangular stone houses. The churches in Ethiopia echo the shape of the houses. In many parts of the country there are ancient churches carved out of solid volcanic rock. Modern churches are built in three concentric circles. In a modern church, the choir assembles in the outer circle. Each person entering the church is given a candle. The congregation walks around the church three times in a solemn procession, holding the flickering candles. Then they gather in the second circle to stand throughout the long mass, with the men and boys separated from the women and girls. The center circle is the holiest space in the church, where the priest serves Holy Communion.Around the time of Ganna, the men and boys play a game that is also called ganna. It is somewhat like hockey, played with a curved stick and a round wooden ball. The foods enjoyed during the Christmas season include wat, a thick, spicy stew of meat, vegetables, and sometimes eggs as well. The wat is served from a beautifully decorated watertight basket onto a "plate" of injera, which is flat sourdough bread. Pieces of injera are used as an edible spoon to scoop up the wat.Twelve days after Ganna, on January 19, Ethiopians begin the three-day celebration called Timkat, which commemorates the baptism of Christ. The children walk to church services in a procession. They wear the crowns and robes of the church youth groups they belong to. The grown-ups wear the shamma. The priests will now wear their red and white robes and carry embroidered fringed umbrellas. The music of Ethiopian instruments makes the Timkat procession a very festive event. The sistrum is a percussion instrument with tinkling metal disks. A long, T-shaped prayer stick called a makamiya taps out the walking beat and also serves as a support for the priest during the long church service that follows. Church officials called dabtaras study hard to learn the musical chants, melekets, for the ceremony.Ethiopian men play another sport called yeferas guks. They ride on horseback and throw ceremonial lances at each other. Ganna and Timkat are not occasions for giving gifts in Ethiopia. If a child receives any gift at all, it is usually a small gift of clothing. Religious observances, feasting, and games are the focus of the season.

Merry Christmas From Our Family To Yours!!

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
(Isaiah 9:6-7)

Chemo Begins (Again....)

My sweet mom begins chemo treatments tomorrow. Please pray for
--Strength for tomorrow
--Minimal side effects (especially that her neuropathy would not get worse)
--That her red blood cell count does not drop (puts her at risk for pneumonia)
--Pray for her emotions and discouragement
--That her chemo would have drastic effects on the tumor
--For total healing!

Thank you so much for praying!

Stream of Consciousness

For old times sake:
  • I think that you're a smart person if you understand the title of this post...it means that you read James Joyce in high school. And if you read James Joyce then you must be slightly smart b/c that guy was a crazy psycho writer.
  • All of that talk about James Joyce is just my personal opinion.
  • Maybe you love James Joyce. If you do I have to admit that I think you're a little weird.
  • Speaking of weird...i misspell that word every time i write it. I always write "wierd". But then it looks weird. Wierd looks weird.
  • Are you confused yet?
  • I'm feeling a little more "bah humbug" this year than I ever have before. Trying to figure out why.
  • Jane is coming home.
  • Jane is coming home.
  • Jane is coming home.
  • Sorry, can't stop thinking about that one.
  • Sometimes I feel like a really un-fun person.
  • Is that unfunness just a season, or is that the person that I've become? Sometimes life feels way to heavy.
  • Sometimes I don't know how to act like a "normal" person. I've had so much sorrow in my life over the past 3 years--sometimes I don't even know how to respond to things/people/situations.
  • I really hate that.
  • I could eat guacamole every day of my life.
  • Would I turn green if I ate guacamole every day of my life?
  • How could we live apart from God's grace?
  • My favorite name for God right now is Emmanuel--God WITH us.
  • I wonder what it was like when the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and she conceived Jesus. Could she feel anything? What was she thinking? Was she afraid?
  • I don't remember how much formula to feed a 10 month old.
  • I wish I knew when Jane's birthday really was. Kind of cool that the only ones that really know are God and her birthmom. That is something that belongs to her.
  • Does Jane's birthmom think about her every day? Did she wait in the shadows to make sure that someone was going to rescue her baby?
  • I don't know where to begin in all my packing for Ethiopia.
  • Why is Ava the funniest kid ever?
  • What would I ever do without Ava?
  • I am jealous of Ava's clothes.
  • I want to go on a date with my husband.
  • I started rereading the Harry Potter series several months ago. I'm on book 5 & a certain beloved someone is about to die. Since I know that that person is about to die, I didn't have the guts to keep reading. The book has been sitting on my night stand for almost a month now.
  • I can't begin a new book until I've finished the one I'm on.
  • That means that I haven't read in over a month.
  • Speaking of...why did that beloved character have to die? Come on J.K.? What's up with that??? Why him??
  • I would love to go to lunch with J.K. And that's what I would call her. Or homedog.
  • Did I just say that out loud?
  • Does it count as saying it out loud if you type it?
  • How many bullet points have I typed?
  • Is anyone still reading?
  • Am I crazy?
  • I love hot tamales.
  • If I was a candy bar I would be
  • Why did I start that sentence? I have no idea what I would be.
  • What would you be?
  • Have you commented on the last post so you can enter to win the cd? You better hurry!
  • God is pursuing Ava. I love that about Him!
  • I need a fancy dress for a party.
  • Am I as consistent in being the persistent widow in Luke 18?
  • Am I making an impact on anyone?
  • What will Ava remember most about her childhood?
  • Am I ok with that?
  • How can my marriage be even better?
  • I love soft sheets.
  • Wow...that was funny how I wrote about marriage then the next point was about sheets. Frued could analyze that for days.
  • Yes, I think it's obvious that I'm a crazy person.
  • The.
  • End.
